Summary of the Position:
Original, quality content is perhaps the most effective tool for the marketing team to use when promoting books. There is a current shortage of consistent and qualified contacts that can deliver this content to the team. Therefore, the need for an in-house technical content editor has arisen. This position will source, develop, prepare, edit and distribute content used in marketing campaigns for Packt books.
Activities
The Technical content editor will be responsible for producing and distributing the following content:
Abridged Articles
These are 1200-3000 word long articles extracted from Packt books. The technical content editor is expected to read through the book and identify two to three suitable chapters or subjects that can be edited and published as stand alone articles. They will liaise with the book’s development editor and the online marketing coordinators to ensure that the articles are relevant and on topical subjects. They will work with technical editors of that specific book to extract the material.
These articles will then be published on www.PacktPub.com to attract visitors and improve Packt’s performance in search engines. The online marketing coordinators will also offer these articles to their contacts to help promote the book they were extracted from.
Original Articles
The technical content editor will research, contact and develop a portfolio of contacts that they can call upon to write technical and relevant articles for publication on www.PacktPub.com. They will have a small budget to use to help attract a high calibre of author. The technical content editor will suggest improvements, edit and publish these articles on the website.
Marketing
Once an article is published, it needs to get visits. Marketing these articles is one of primary objectives for a TCE.
Development
Publishing a certain types of articles can get you only so far. TCE will help the content team leader to develop more types of articles. They will do the thorough research on a certain topic and will find how many types of articles can be published on it. e.g. FAQ articles, Questions and Answers, recipes and many others.
Key Performance Indicators
1. The number of articles published on PacktPub.com each month. This KPI then leads to a number of sub key performance indicators:
a. The number of page views the article receives
b. The number of visits that article refers to book pages
c. The amount of incoming traffic that articles receive from third party websites
2. The number of new authors recruited to write articles each month
3. The number of regular authors contributing articles to PacktPub.com
Desired Candidate Profile:
Pre-Requisite Skills:
English
The Technical content editor needs to have first class written English skills, with the ability to understand English and edit text on documents for publication.
• Work with and develop relationships with authors using clear, direct and focused e-mail communication
• Timely and clear communication with marketing account executives to understand what abridged articles would work well on third party websites
Technical Ability
The Technical content editor will need to understand the subjects that our books are written on and appreciate what constitutes a well-written technical article.
• Good understanding of HTML to code articles
• Good understanding of Open Source technologies
Skills to Develop
Project Management
The TCE will be working on a number of different projects at any given time. Therefore it is crucial that they are organized and confident with prioritizing and handling a busy workload.
• Ensure appropriate research is undertaken in a timely fashion
o Online
o Internally with the Editorial department and using Title Information Sheets etc.
• Handle relationships with authors and the timelines for the production of their articles
• Ensure articles are developed for all published books
Planning
The TCE will need to plan a schedule of articles in advance of their publication. They will need to understand what subjects will be popular and develop articles that attract a lot of visits.
Person Spec
• The TCE will need to recruit and work with a large number of authors; therefore, they need to be pro-active with a determined, persistent but assertive attitude
• The candidate’s focus will be on producing a large amount of traffic to the website, which requires a results-driven approach to their work
• The candidate will be working within a team environment; however they will also be working as an individual towards set goals and objectives. Therefore, they need to demonstrate the confidence, ability and motivation to work in both situations.
